New research out of University of North Carolina suggests that river ice cover will decline about six days for every one degree Celsius air temperature warming at a global scale. Research by Yang et al. 2020 published in Nature use satellite imagery to show over half of the large rivers worldwide freeze seasonally and this duration is expected to shrink in the future.
