Making the best possible river ice observing program for Alaskans, by Alaskans - Fresh Eyes on Ice Needs Assessment is Complete!

21 June 2022

Thanks to your input and the collaboration between Fresh Eyes on Ice partners from University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC), National Weather Service Alaska Pacific River Forecast Center (NWS APRFC), and NASA GLOBE Observer (NASA GO), our needs assessment is complete!

The Goldstream Group evaluation firm led us in conducting a thorough assessment of ice concerns, local knowledge, research priorities, data product needs, and technological access issues across diverse people making observations of river ice and using the data. Thank you to the river community members, educators, river forecasters, scientists, and ice observers who completed the survey and participated in interviews.

We will use this information to guide the continued development of the Fresh Eyes on Ice science and program, and inform the NWS Alaska River Watch and GLOBE Observer programs. We want river ice observing in our state to be the highest quality possible for community safety and science - for Alaskans, by Alaskans!
