Several Fresh Eyes on Ice scientists were a part of the Sediment, Ice, and Learning on the Tanana (SILT) project, which tested different ways to measure sediment concentration under river ice. We worked with middle school students in Fairbanks and Nenana to build sensors that measured sediment underneath river ice and design payload attachment systems that would allow us to use drones to fly the sensors over the river during spring break-up.
We created five lesson plans from the SILT project to share with other educators interested in exploring sediment in river ice! The lesson plans are available for download here.
