1 April 2026
The Fresh Eyes on Ice project is teaming up with SciStarter and hundreds of other citizen science projects to encourage our community to join a global effort to log 2.5 million Acts of Science this April! April is Citizen Science Month, a nationwide initiative that invites people to participate in real scientific research through simple activities that contribute to active studies in every scientific field imaginable. In 2026, the national goal is 2.5 million acts of science - measurable public contributions to scientific research made during April. This year is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, so we are aiming to surpass 2.5 million Acts of Science to honor this landmark year.
For Fresh Eyes on Ice, Acts of Science include sharing photos of ice conditions on our photo portal or using the GLOBE Observer app and for our community monitoring teams, logging ice thickness and snow depth measurements in our community data entry form. Every photo and data measurement counts as an Act of Science that we can log towards the national goal of 2.5 million!
How to participate with the Fresh Eyes on Ice project in 2.5 Million Acts of Science this April:
Note: We highly encourage everyone to share their Acts of Science on our Fresh Eyes on Ice Facebook group to help generate enthusiasm and inspire others to participate in Citizen Science Month. While photos that are posted to our Facebook group are important for community awareness, we can only count photos that have been uploaded to our Photo Portal or GLOBE Observer as Acts of Science for Citizen Science Month. So after you share your photos on Facebook, be sure to upload them too!
We’ll be sharing weekly updates in our Facebook group on the Acts of Science our project is contributing to Citizen Science Month. We hope we can count on you to share your photos and data measurements during April to help reach 2.5 million Acts of Science nationwide!
