New lesson plan - Scaling the science of ice

16 February 2026

We are excited to share a new lesson plan created for the Fresh Eyes on Ice project called "Scaling the Science of Ice: How Images Help Us Understand Changing Ice Conditions." In this activity, students annotate and arrange images of freeze-up on the Tanana River in chronological order from three different series of images of ground photos, drone photos, and satellite images with the goal of describing how different types of images are important for documenting ice conditions.

This lesson was created by Dana Brown, Katie Spellman, and Sarah Clement for the Fresh Eyes on Ice project through the NASA Citizen Science for Earth Systems Program awards #80NSSC21K0858 and #80NSSC22K1915 as well as the National Science Foundation award #1836523. The activity was inspired by the GLOBE Program Green-Up Cards lesson created by David Verbyla, Elena Sparrow, and Leslie Gordon.
